The human body has the natural ability to heal itself in many ways. Regenerative medicine can help you heal faster than conventional treatments. Regenerative medicine is the process of replacing or ‘regenerating’ human cells, tissues, and organs to establish normal functions.
With the proper treatment, you can enhance your own body’s ability to heal itself at the source rather than masking symptoms. The healing process starts quickly, with optimal results in only a few weeks.
Types of Regenerative Medicine
One area of medicine with huge advancements recently is the field of Regenerative medicine. At the moment, there are 3 types of regenerative medicine: Stem Cell therapy, Platelet rich plasma (PRP), and Prolotherapy.
- Stem Cell Therapy- stem cell therapy is a type of regenerative medicine that uses special types of cells, stem cells, to repair injuries. Stem cells are the building blocks of every tissue in the human body. When injected into the targeted area, they play a key role in replacing damaged tissue and easing inflammation, signaling the regrowth of new, healthy tissue.
- Platelet-rich Plasma- Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP for short, is the process of withdrawing blood from your own body. This blood is then placed into a centrifuge to separate the plasma from the blood. The plasma contains platelets which contain special growth factors. This plasma is then re-injected into the problematic area allowing the platelets to begin repairing damaged tissue and regenerating new tissue. You often see this treatment associated with athletes for knees, and other commonly injured joints.
- Prolotherapy- Prolotherapy, also called proliferation therapy, is an injectable therapy that treats joints and other connective tissues. The physician usually injects a natural irritant such as dextrose, glycerin, or saline into the soft tissue of the injured area. This irritates the injury site, triggering the body’s healing response. As a result, the body will grow new connective fibers to repair the damaged tissues.
Low Risk with Regenerative Medicine
Stem Cell therapy, PRP, and Prolotherapy are all minimally invasive, low-risk procedures. Minor bruising at the injection site is the only minor side effect, but this usually goes away within a few days. Generally after treatment you can resume your normal activities. This is the reason more people are leaning towards regenerative medicine over medication and orthopedic procedures.
